WIDA is a consortium of states dedicated to the design
and implementation of high quality standards and
equitable educational opportunities for English language
learners. It is part of the Wisconsin Center for Education
Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our
four categories of work include: Standards, Assessment,
Professional Development, and Research.
Standards-WIDA's standards show how language learners
can actively engage in learning the academic language
needed for success. The Standards include: English
Language Development, Spanish Language Development
and WIDA Standards in International Contexts.
Professional Development-WIDA's professional
development offerings support educators to ensure the
success of language learners.
Assessment-ACCESS for ELLs is the WIDA
Consortium's secure, No Child Left Behind-compliant
assessment of English language proficiency. It is
only administered in states that are members of the
WIDA Consortium. WIDA MODEL is series of box kit
assessments of English language proficiency that can
be used as an interim benchmark assessment during
the year to monitor growth. Grades 1-12 test kits
also contain a screener form of the test for program
placement decisions. WIDA MODEL is available for
purchase by any school.
Research-The mission of WIDA's research department is
to provide timely, meaningful, and actionable research that
promotes educational equity and academic achievement
for linguistically and culturally diverse students.
