The University of Miami invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of its School of
Education and Human Development. The Dean is the academic head and chief executive of one of the
university's 12 degree earning schools and colleges. The Dean reports to the Executive Vice President and
THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Miami is a private university that was founded in 1925. It is the largest
research university in the Southeastern United States. The University had an enrollment of 16,801 students
in fall 2016 (10,849 undergraduates and 5,952 graduate and professional students), which is characterized
by a high level of linguistic and ethnocultural diversity. It is located on a beautiful campus in suburban Coral
Gables, part of the vibrant intellectual and multicultural community of the Miami metropolitan area. The
University comprises eleven degree-granting schools and colleges, including Architecture, Arts and
Sciences, Business Administration, Communication, Continuing and International Education, Education and
Human Development, Engineering, Law, the Miller School of Medicine, the Patricia and Philip Frost School
of Music, Nursing and Health Studies, and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The
core of the University is its more than 3,000 full-time faculty housed in three academic campuses within the
greater Miami area. The University is engaged in $324 million in research and sponsored program
expenditures annually and was ranked as 46th among national universities in the most recent issue of U.S.
News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges."
THE SCHOOL: The School of Education and Human Development has a well-earned reputation for rigorous
research, innovative programs, and community collaboration. The vision of the School is to be a center of
excellence in the study, promotion, and integration of educational, psychological, and physical well-being in
multicultural communities. It serves approximately 950 undergraduate and graduate students, and offers
27 different programs leading to bachelors, master's, Ed.D., and Ph.D. degrees. The school offers an online
master's program in Sport Administration, which is the largest virtual program in the university. A second
online graduate program, in Applied Learning Science, will be launched in 2018.
The school is organized into three departments, each headed by a Chair, and is housed in two buildings on
the Coral Gables campus. It operates four physiology and exercise science labs, a center for individual and
family counseling and counselor training, a research center on community and educational well-being, as
well as several computer labs. Its 53 full-time faculty members are actively engaged in their respective fields
by conducting research, publishing regularly, editing journals, working directly with communities and
schools, collaborating with colleagues nationally and internationally, and by hosting or presenting at
conferences. Their teaching evaluations are consistently superior.
