Google Tool Fuels Debate

Google has announced the launch of a new tool aimed at
detecting when students submit work that is not their own,
thrusting itself into long-running debates over how to root
out plagiarism while also protecting students' privacy and
teaching them how to responsibly cite others' work.
"We realized we had a real opportunity to approach this
problem differently," Zach Yeskel, a group program manager for Google for Education, said in an interview.
"Our goal is not to detect plagiarism. It's to detect similarity and originality."

In Arizona, Stephen lived with his
grandparents in deep poverty on the
Havasupai reservation and struggled
to learn in a severely understaffed
school in the middle of Grand Canyon
National Park.
In New York, Maria left her middle
school midyear, after years of physical
and sexual harassment and bullying
led to a drop in grades and constant
anxiety.
All three young people have been
identified with learning disabilities
and all three say their repeated traumas complicate their special education
needs.
These students (whose real names
have been withheld) and their fellow

plaintiffs are at the center of three ongoing test lawsuits that argue schools have
a responsibility to consider and mitigate
the effects of trauma on learning. The
outcomes of these lawsuits could have
ramifications for schools nationwide as
evidence grows on the negative effects
that traumatic events can have on children's learning and well-being.
It's not that all students need individualized education plans, said Lauren
Lystrup, a juvenile-justice and litigation
fellow at the National Center for Youth
Law in Oakland, Calif., who has been
following the lawsuits. "It's that the
district itself has practices that are exacerbating trauma, and those practices
need to be addressed."
Traumatic experiences can range from
discrete events like living through a natural disaster to the ongoing stress of parental abuse or homelessness. Emerging

When Susan McClarty's district made the switch
to open educational resources, the 6th and 7th grade
science teacher at Centennial Middle School in Broken Arrow, Okla., initially struggled to find quality
materials aligned with the Next Generation Science
Standards. "We were kind of wading through water,
trying to create something out of nothing," she said.
But last school year, her school participated in a
field test for a new, open-source middle grades science curriculum: OpenSciEd. The units were easy to
use and emphasized hands-on discovery, she said,
and using them took the pressure off of teachers to
shape a coherent curriculum.
McClarty is one of the many teachers who have

"Quality Counts 2019" offers evidence for both in an annual
summing up of the nation's K-12 system. The Education Week
Research Center analyzed dozens of factors ranging from
the academic to the socioeconomic in coming up with its
all-inclusive state rankings and A-F grades. The results and
analysis offer cautions along with clues to moving forward as
policymakers seek to jump-start national progress in public

found it difficult to find materials that answer the
NGSS' call for science instruction based on questioning and discovery.
Now, OpenSciEd is slowly rolling out one of the
first full, OER curricula that claims alignment to
these standards. Three units are currently available
to the public: 6th grade thermal energy, 7th grade
metabolic reactions, and 8th grade sound waves.
All three were rated high quality by the peer review panel at Achieve, a nonprofit organization that
helped states write the NGSS.
OpenSciEd, backed by funders including the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Carnegie
Corporation of New York, plans to release the remaining units in groups of three every six months.
