Four years ago, school district leaders
did something counterintuitive in this
tech-laden metropolis, where STEM
isn't just a buzzword but practically a
way of life.
They got rid of accelerated middleschool math classes.
Part of an ambitious project to end
the relentless assignment of underserved students into lower-level math,
the city now requires all students
to take math courses of equal rigor
through geometry, in classrooms that
are no longer segregated by ability.
That means no "honors" classes. No
gifted track. No weighted GPAs until later
in high school. No 8th grade Algebra 1.
In terms of curriculum, this is about
as controversial as it gets. And that's
not just because of its math implications, but because of the parental
pushback such a plan is guaranteed
to generate.
In effect, by de-tracking math classes,
San Francisco has done away with
one of the key avenues that the wellconnected use to give their children an
academic advantage.
Fallout was swift. Parents, concerned

and software programs is again highlighting the weak cybersecurity practices in K-12 education.
From California to New Jersey, teenagers have allegedly improperly accessed
student-information systems, online
learning programs, and college-counseling software in at least 10 states this
school year. Often, their motivation was to
change grades. And, typically, the hacks
were technically unsophisticated, involving little more than students finding a
teacher's password or login credentials.
K-12 information-technology experts
say the scope of the problem reflects an
ongoing failure by schools and districts
to take even the most basic measures
to protect their networks.
"The biggest challenge to maintaining cybersecurity is not technology but
people," said Marie Bjerede, the principal for leadership initiatives at the
Consortium for School Networking, a

Patchwork of Programs Sustains High Achieving Students in Remote Schools

This town of 500 people sits at the end of
the Glenn Highway, 180 miles northeast of
Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. It's a hub for
travelers headed to the Copper River Valley,
or farther, to Canada and the lower 48 states,
and has much to offer in mountainscapes and
a quiet way of life. For gifted students like Aric
Cox, though, specialized educational resources
are limited.
"I encourage him and his sister to make the
most of what you got here. Yeah, it's not as won-

derful as ... some other place, but we make the
most of it," Sherri Cox, Aric's mother, said.
When it comes to providing advanced academic
services, Glennallen shares many challenges
with other rural schools across the country: too
few specialized teachers, spotty internet access,
underfunded districts, a lack of access to rigorous
academic content.
Carolyn Callahan, a professor in the department of curriculum, instruction, and special
education at the University of Virginia, said that
rural gifted students have a particular disadvantage in schooling and that Alaska may be an

States Still Strain
To Find One Path
On Accountability

A hallmark of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act was that states would
get enough freedom to design one coherent set of priorities for their schools, finally putting an end to the politically divisive system that preceded ESSA, when
thousands of schools answered to distinct
federal and state accountability systems.
But, after months of failed negotiations
with U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy
DeVos, at least three states-Colorado,
Florida, and Indiana-have not figured
out a way to harmonize their state's priorities with ESSA's, and so their schools
next year will be ranked twice over: once
for federal accountability purposes, and
once for their state's.
For districts and schools in those states,
that means two different messages to
parents and teachers about how schools
stack up against their peers, and two separate messages about where they should
place their time, money, and efforts.

in those states ultimately decide to
