School choice advocates and backers of
traditional public schools are talking past
each other, wrote Robert Maranto, a professor
Getty
of education reform at the University of
Arkansas in Fayetteville, in a May 19
Commentary. School choice proponents tend to see traditional public schools as failing to
attract high-quality teachers, while public school advocates tend to see public schools as
community anchors populated by caring educators. Maranto, himself a school choice advocate,
says both sides are right. Those in favor of school choice shouldn't overlook the good that many
public schools do, and those in favor of public schools shouldn't dismiss vouchers and charters
out of hand.

Although some readers saw merit in Maranto's efforts to bring together disparate views in the
education community, others largely disagreed with his characterization of school choice,
arguing that charter schools do not provide a substantial advantage over regular public
schools and that vouchers inappropriately funnel public dollars into the private sector.
