than 36,000 donors. How much money each person
will receive won't be decided until after June 30,
once the number of eligible recipients and the total
amount of donations are known.
The money was raised through the crowdfunding
website GoFundMe.com, as well as outside fundraising activities such as benefit concerts, employer
campaigns, and pledges by retail establishments to
donate shares of purchase prices.
About 3,200 students were on campus the day of
the shootings, according to Broward County district records. Also eligible will be about 225 staff
members.

Students in Support of Gun Ownership
Stage Counterprotests Around Nation

n = DATA AVAILABLE

Students around the country took part in a school
walkout last week to support gun ownership.
The walkout was organized by Will Riley, a student from Carlsbad High School in New Mexico.
More than 200 of his classmates walked out with
him. Walkouts were also reported in schools in Iowa,
Michigan, Montana, New York, and North Carolina.
The counterprotests to those started by students at Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School
in Florida did not get the traction or news coverage that the gun-control advocates' demonstrations have received.

Driver Shortage Spurs Houston District
To Charter Luxury Buses for Students
The Houston school district is chartering plush,
television-equipped motor coaches because it doesn't
have enough drivers to keep its fleet of yellow school
buses on the road.
Chief Operating Officer Brian Busby said a combination of budget cuts and dislocations caused by Hurricane Harvey has left the district 300 drivers short.
The charter buses come with drivers, and the district is on pace to spend $8 million on the charter
buses this year.
Busby said he hopes the district can recoup at
least some of the cost through storm-related insurance payments and federal grants. Despite
scheduling several job fairs over the summer, he
said that may not resolve the problem by next
school year.

AUSTIN BEUTNER, a former investment

SHARON GRIFFIN, the Shelby County

banker and philanthropist with no experience
leading a school district, has been chosen
to run the Los Angeles
school system. Beutner
also founded Vision to
Learn, which provides
free eye screenings and
eyeglasses to low-income
students, though reports say the nonprofit
has fallen behind on delivery and was in
danger of losing its $6 million contract with
the district. He also did short stints as the
city's deputy mayor and as the publisher of
the Los Angeles Times. In addition, Beutner
has worked with the district to review its
operations.

system's chief of schools, has been selected
as the chief of Tennessee's Achievement
School District, which
oversees more than
30 schools, as well as
assistant commissioner of
school turnaround.
She was promoted to the
chief of schools job in Shelby County last year,
after heading up that system's Innovation
Zone to improve poor-performing schools in
the district that includes Memphis. Griffin
previously worked as a teacher and a principal.

BRIDGET TERRY LONG,
an economist, will become the next dean of
Harvard's Graduate School of Education.
Currently, she is the Saris Professor of
Education and Economics
at the school and
previously served as
its academic dean
and faculty director of
the research doctoral
program. Long is also a research associate
of the National Bureau of Economic Research
and a board director for MDRC, a socialpolicy-research organization.

NANA BANERJEE, has been been tapped to
be the new president and CEO of McGrawHill Education. Banerjee served as group
president at Verisk
Analytics, a global
company that uses
advanced technologies
to collect and analyze
billions of records. He
was previously the CEO at Argus, which was
acquired by Verisk, and was the head of
Citibank's credit-card business in the United
Kingdom.

STEM ACCESS AND SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS
In the first year of online testing for the
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness
for College and Careers, or PARCC, researchers found that Massachusetts students across grades 3-8 showed the equivalent of five months less academic progress
in math and as much as 11 months less in
English/language arts compared with the
performance of students who took the test
on paper.
But once schools and students had a year
of online testing under their belts, the testmode effects shrunk by half in English/language arts and by a third in math, found the
researchers.
Districts were allowed to volunteer to
move to online testing in 2015 or 2016. About
half-mostly high-performing districts-did
so. The study compared how similar students
at the same schools performed on different
versions of the assessment. The state results
were statistically adjusted to account for the
mode effects in its testing.

High schools with high levels of black or Latino enrollment (defined as having
more than 75 percent black and Latino students) offer advanced math and

No Data, No Honor:
Only Nine States
Eligible for Award
A not-so-funny thing happened on the way
to creating a new award to honor high schools
that do a good job preparing students for
college: It became nearly impossible.
GreatSchools, an organization that gathers
and shares school information to inform
parents, wanted to confer its new College
Success Awards on schools in every state. But
a lack of data forced it to scale the awards
down to just nine states.
In a report released late last month,
GreatSchools lists the 814 winners of its new
award, but also describes the difficulty it had
assembling all the information it considers
necessary to paint a meaningful picture of how
well high schools are doing.
Samantha Olivieri, GreatSchools' chief
strategy officer, said in a call with reporters that
the report celebrates the good work in schools,
but also serves as a "call to action" to states to
publish a wider variety of metrics, all in one
place, to provide parents with "a more complete
picture of high school quality."
The idea behind the new award was to
tell a more detailed story about schools
than standardized-test scores can convey.
GreatSchools judged schools in three categories:
how well they prepared students for college,
based on SAT or ACT scores; the percentage of
students who enrolled in college, and how well
students performed once they got there.
Trouble is, data in all three categories were
available for only Arkansas, Colorado, Florida,
Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri,
and Ohio. (Oklahoma, Connecticut, and
Minnesota eventually supplied the data, but
were too late for this year.)
Olivieri said that of the three categories
of data GreatSchools was searching for,
information on college remediation and
persistence was the toughest to find.
Even among GreatSchools' nine winners,
missing data led some states to be judged
on only one data point while others were
judged on two. In Florida, for example, college
performance was judged on the basis of
persistence data, while in Ohio, that category
was judged only on the basis of remedial rates.
Winners represent a disproportionately low
share of schools with high poverty rates.
The winners were more likely to provide
rigorous academic offerings, in and out
of school, and to have systematic ways
of identifying and supporting struggling
students. They also have "robust" staffs of
guidance and college counselors.
