On-Site Police, Security More Common
At Majority-Black Secondary Schools
Secondary schools with enrollments of mostly black
students are more likely to have on-site police and security officers than schools with largely white enrollment, an analysis of new federal civil rights data finds.
About 54 percent of middle schools and high
schools where the student body was at least
75 percent African-American had a sworn law enforcement officer or security guard in 2015-16, according to an analysis by Child Trends. By contrast,
such security personnel could be found at 42 percent of all high schools and middle schools and at
33 percent of secondary schools where enrollment
was at least 75 percent white, the analysis found.
Civil rights groups say a greater presence of security personnel, differing discipline philosophies, and
fewer support staff in majority black schools may
contribute to disproportionately high rates of discipline for black students at state and national levels.

Texas Unveils Special Education Fix
After Denying Services for Years
Texas has unveiled a formal plan to overhaul special education statewide, after federal officials found
that services were for years illegally denied to students with disabilities.
The Texas Education Agency released a draft plan
in January. It conducted 100-plus feedback focus
groups with students, parents, teachers, and school
administrators before releasing the final plan last
week. It calls for increasing special education staffing, providing better special education training for
teachers, and creating more tools for parents of children with suspected disabilities.
Texas also will assist districts in identifying and
helping thousands of students who were previously
denied services.

AFT to Wells Fargo: Choose Between
America's Teachers and the NRA
The American Federation of Teachers has dropped
Wells Fargo from a list of recommended mortgage providers for its 1.7 million union members, stemming
from the bank's ties to gun makers and the National
Rifle Association. More than 20,000 AFT members
currently hold mortgages through the bank.
The break comes after Wells Fargo CEO Tim
Sloan failed to follow through on a meeting with
AFT President Randi Weingarten that he had sug-

Former Baltimore County Superintendent
Sentenced to Jail Time in Perjury Case
A former Baltimore County schools superintendent
who served on prominent national education panels
has been sentenced to serve six months behind bars
after pleading guilty to perjury charges.
The sentencing marked another milestone on a
dramatic downward trajectory for Dallas Dance, a
charismatic and highly ambitious administrator who
was just 30 in 2012 when he was chosen to lead the
111,000-student Baltimore County schools.
Over years, Dance failed to report that he earned
nearly $150,000 for part-time consulting work while
superintendent and worked on the side for a company
that won an $875,000 no-bid contract in his district.
Dance will also face two years of supervised probation and 700 hours of community service.

Scientists Look
Like What?
Pop "scientist" into an image search
and you're likely to see people in
goggles and white coats, swirling liquids
in Erlenmyer flasks or peering into
microscopes. A new study finds the older
students get, the more their image of
a "scientist" comes into line with that
stereotypical view.
But in the past 50 years, girls and boys
alike have become more willing to picture
women in scientific fields, according to a
recent meta-analysis in the journal Child
Development. Northwestern University
researchers scrutinized the results and
drawings from 78 studies of more than
20,000 K-12 students since 1966. In each
of those studies, students across grades
and states had been asked to draw a
scientist at work.
Overall, students drew about
73 percent of scientists as male, but
women have gained a lot of ground. In
the studies conducted before 1983, only
0.6 percent of all drawings depicted a
woman as a scientist. In more recent
studies, women are drawn as scientists
28 percent of the time.
"If you ask children to draw a person,
they are more likely to draw their own
sex than the opposite sex," said David
Miller, a postdoctoral psychologist and
the lead author of the study,
Boys overwhelmingly draw scientists
as male, while girls tend to envision them
as female-at least at first. At age 6, girls
drew about 70 percent of their scientists
as women. But by the time they were 16,
girls depicted scientists as male
75 percent of the time.
"The change toward more men being
drawn as children age merely reflects
that they are more aware of their
society as they get older-that is, more
aware that more men than women are
scientists," said co-author Alice Eagley.
In notes accompanying some of the
studies, some students specifically
mentioned famous scientists such as
Marie Curie or Albert Einstein, or popular
television personalities such as Bill Nye,
the Science Guy as shaping their view of
what a scientist looks like. Nonetheless,
their views became more stereotypical in
concept as they got older. The researchers
found, for example, that older students
were more likely to depict a scientist
inside, in a lab, while younger students
were more likely to draw scientists
outside. (And it's worth noting that while
the researchers did not dig much into
racial differences, 79 percent of all of the
drawings depicted scientists as white.)
"I think that result suggests that
children learn multiple stereotypes
about scientists as they mature, not just
stereotypes about gender," Miller said.
