Alternative-certification programs are largely to blame for the "dumbing-down" of
teacher preparation-which ultimately hurts the students who need the most help,
wrote Lawrence Baines, an associate dean at the University of Oklahoma, in a
March 8 Commentary. Baines argued that unprepared teachers who use
nontraditional routes to certification contributed to a rise in teacher misconduct and
a decline in student achievement.
Readers largely agreed that alternative-certification programs, especially online
ones, may not produce the most qualified teachers. But many also viewed the
author's focus on certification as too narrow, pointing to teaching conditions such as
low salaries and a lack of district support as bigger obstacles to hiring the best and
brightest teachers.

lack of adequate teaching preparation is the
online degree. In my experience, online degrees are simply not worth the paper they're
