Innovative High School Seeks Founding Team

The recently founded Delta School is committed to strengthening and enriching student learning through innovative teaching
projects. We define "innovation" as mindsets, design processes, and teaching practices that challenge traditional norms and
assumptions. These can take the form of new strategies or iterations or remixes of existing strategies. Our school is designed
with project requirements and completion of competencies rather than traditional subject-based courses.
We are looking for two project managers: a Content Rigor Manager and a Project Time Manager to review all teacher
proposed projects for students and monitor student work toward competencies once projects are underway. We are also
looking for two Project Coaches who will design projects for implementation with students. All hires will participate fully in the
life of the students and help to develop the program.

The Delta School Upper School will function as a lab school serving a total of 50 students in two learning cohorts.  We have a
6500 sq foot Maker's Space on campus along with a school farm and state of the art classroom pavilions. 
From 9/2017-5/2018 team members will be in residence at the school to plan, observe, develop and create the new upper
school program for implementation in 2018-19 school year. This residency will be fully compensated with benefits including
housing.

Meredith and Cristina, but has been a consistent part of Seattle Grace's culture since the
two young residents not only coined, but lived
the phrase.
No matter what stage of your career you are in,
keep your eyes, ears--and heart--open to finding "your person." Why? Because you are called
to a profession with quite a daunting task: educating, supporting, and loving the children and
youth who are our future.
You know the African proverb, "It takes a village
to raise a child." Trust me, the more you live, the

The Status of HR Certification as a Driver of
Equity in Pre-K-12 Education
Introduction

Methods and Participants

Despite the immense benefits effective educators have on students' academic performance and life outcomes (e.g., Chetty,
Friedman, & Rockoff, 2011; Sanders & Rivers, 1996), numerous
studies show that children from low-income backgrounds are less
likely than their more affluent peers to attend high-performing
schools or be taught by experienced and highly effective teachers
(U.S. Department of Education, 2013; TNTP, 2012). A report by
Education First (2015) suggests that this inequity results from six
root causes: (1) ineffective leadership, (2) poor working conditions, (3) few career advancement opportunities for teachers, (4)
inadequate compensation, (5) human capital management systems (HCMSs) that fail to retain schools' most effective teachers
at higher rates than their least effective teachers and (6) the tendency of productive teachers to move out of schools with lessproductive colleagues. Central to these causes and their respective solutions is schools' and districts' ability, or lack thereof, to
employ strategic human resources practices to assess, anticipate
and quickly address educators' needs.

Battelle for Kids (BFK) developed a survey to collect feedback
from HCLEs regarding their current certifications, professional
development opportunities and thoughts around the types of certification or credentialing they would most prefer. The 21-item
survey was developed in partnership with the American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA) and the Texas
Association of School Personnel Administrators (TASPA), who
offered input and survey data from 2006, 2011 and 2014 to inform the development of the current survey. BFK released the
survey to AASPA members in spring 2015, and received responses from 470 HCLEs in 28 states. Respondents included
primarily district-level executives; building leaders and directors;
and specialist- or generalist-level staff members; including as HR
professionals. Seventy-five percent work in districts serving
25,000 or fewer students, 21.7 percent represent districts of
25,000 to 100,000 students and 5.1 percent come from districts
of 100,000-plus students.

One remedy for this identified gap is to offer human capital leaders (e.g., district leaders, school principals, central-office-based
HR professionals) opportunities to develop expertise around the
implementation of effective HR practices in education. However,
no such opportunities exist at the level of depth and specificity
these leaders need to attract, retain and ensure equitable access to excellent educators. Current professional development
offerings include general HR certifications that are not tailored to
education settings, and high-level workshops or conferences
that focus on HR in education but do not necessarily take into
account participants' prior knowledge or professional goals.

The survey revealed five key findings regarding the current state
of, and future possibilities for, HR certification in education:

This article examines the certification of human capital leaders
in education (HCLEs). Survey data from HCLEs 28 states offered insight into their perceptions, preferences and perceived
challenges around certification and professional development in
their field. Key findings are discussed, and recommendations for
meeting HCLE's unique needs were identified.

Findings

1. Few respondents currently hold HR-focused credentials
or certifications. Of those surveyed, 81.7 percent reported that
they do not have any HR-focused credentialing or certification.
This finding is not surprising in light of the fact that the most-reported previous roles (i.e., roles held before entering an HR role)
included teacher and building leader (e.g., principal, assistant
principal, dean)--professions in which typically little training is
provided around HR and human capital management...

Whether through your own professional work
as an educator, as a parent or caregiver to those
who need you, the reality of taking on a leadership role with other living, breathing human
beings, who all have personalities, experiences
and values different from your own, will bring
about feelings of pride, love and joy, but also
heartache, confusion, and fog.
We can't do it alone. To be our best, we need to
work together and learn from each other. We all
need a "person," or two or three! And you need
to be able to do the same for someone, too.
So what does this "person" look like?
They listen--but they don't problem solve for
you. With a non-judgmental ear at your service,
you talk out the overwhelming scenario you are
facing. When you speak your circumstances out
loud, clarity often appears. Sometimes some
gentle nudging is needed to get to that point,
but it happens because you opened yourself up
to figure it out.
Someone who has your back. Whether it's giving you an encouraging "You are doing great!"
or "Maybe that wasn't the best way to handle
'x'," they have your back...
