tell how they plan to remember
the content in the future. After the
analysis, a student can schedule a
retest with different questions that
cover the same material.
One morning last fall, about a
dozen students crowded outside a
classroom, waiting to retake a history
test. They didn't all flunk or
miss class on the day of the exam;
several just wanted to show they
had learned material they might
have stumbled over weeks or even
months before.
"They're not arguing with the
teacher over points," Mr. Wallis said.
"It takes away some of the time pressure
for these kids. In a traditional
grading system, it gets harder and
harder to change your grade the
deeper you get into the semester."
"Here, the deeper you get in your
term, the easier it gets to change
your grade. You can always go back
and demonstrate that you now understand
one of those earlier concepts
[that was missed]," he said.
That creates more work for
teachers at the end of each term,
but staff members get additional
nonclass days for grading.
"I've done it a lot of times," said
Destane Sanchez, also an 11th
grader. "It's really just the idea that
I could do better than I've done before,
so I really should do it. Often,
it's just really simple, easy mistakes-everyone
has had a bad day.
Everybody learns differently, and
that's what they try to focus on."
Mr. Hidalgo, the former procrastinator,
agreed. "I know what
the essential skills are [in a given
test], and many chapters can
cover the same essential skill," he
said. "This way, I decide whether
it's worth my time to go back and
do [a retest] or not."
Looking Back
Da Vinci also regularly encourages
students to examine their academic
and emotional growth. At
the end of each semester and before
they graduate, students must
give a talk before a panel of teachers
on what they have learned in
at least three classes, citing specific
examples of mistakes made
and problems overcome.
Engineering teacher Lenny Perez,
who also directs an "advisory class"
to help students plan their presentations,
said the opportunity to reflect
on their growth seems to help
students persevere academically. In
2013, 99 percent of the school's first
full cohort of students graduated
from high school-well above the
state and Los Angeles-metropolitan-area
graduation rates. More
than 60 percent of that cohort were
accepted to four-year colleges, and
another third were accepted to twoyear
colleges.

because the teachers will ask you
questions. Don't just explain it;
explain what you did wrong and
what you did about it. It can really

Measuring Whole Child Success
Across the States

Ask parents what they want their children to be like as young adults, and you will hear qualities such
as happy, healthy, independent, creative, intelligent, and responsible. Such characteristics represent
not only what parents want but also what our youth need to thrive in our increasingly competitive global society. Getting
students to that point, however, requires a shift from the current preoccupation with standardized test scores and narrowly
defined academic achievement to a more comprehensive approach that promotes long-term development and success.
Since 2007, ASCD's Whole Child Initiative
has advocated for such an approach
that ensures each child is healthy, safe,
engaged, supported, and challenged. We
believe that when entire communities
attend to both the in-school factors and
out-of-school influences that affect learning,
children will flourish. Over the past
several years, we've raised awareness
about the whole child approach to education;
shared resources to help schools,
districts, and communities implement
this approach; and seen schools and communities
put whole child education into
practice and experience its benefits.
But how well are we, as a nation, supporting
the whole child? And how far do
we have to go? Trying to answer these
questions is difficult because of a lack of
reliable data about the whole child. Moreover,
the data that do exist are not often
easily accessible and come from multiple
sources. To help, ASCD has produced
new Whole Child State Snapshots that use
existing state-level data to highlight how
well each one is meeting the comprehensive
needs of its children. The snapshots
feature data aligned with the five tenets
of ASCD's Whole Child Initiative that
together provide a fuller, if not exhaustive,
picture of student achievement and
well-being that extends beyond standardized
test scores.
As a nation, our results are mixed.
More than a quarter of U.S. students are
overweight or obese, one in five was
bullied at school in the past year, and just
over half are engaged in school. On the
other hand, our high school graduation
rate is at its highest point in decades. It's
also notable that some of the snapshot
data were not even being collected a few
years ago, indicating a growing national
awareness of and attention to the importance
of these broader indicators of student
success and well-being.
I encourage you to download your
state's snapshot at www.ascd.org/
wholechildsnapshots to see how well the
state is supporting the whole child and
where it has room to grow. Then, refer
to the snapshot's initial ideas for making
targeted and innovative improvements
to help students become productive and
engaged citizens. The ideas range from
developing individualized learning plans
that connect students' academic and
career goals to establishing more meaningful
accountability systems that encompass
a variety of subjects, use multiple
measures of student performance, and
consider how school climate and engagement
influence learning.
It's worth noting that implementing
such ideas and, ultimately, eliciting
improvement on these whole child measures
cannot be done by schools alone.
Families, educators, community members,
and policymakers must work together to
support the whole child and improve their
students' outcomes. Also, what works in
one state may not be effective in another.
Each district, school, and community
needs to determine its own strategies
based on its unique strengths and needs.
ASCD will continue to help educators,
communities, and policymakers support
the whole child through several ongoing
projects, such as supporting state-level
education policies that promote the whole
child approach; forming a network of
schools that have committed to a threeyear,
comprehensive school improvement
process based on the whole child tenets;
and collaborating with the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention to
develop the new Whole School, Whole
Community, Whole Child model designed
to improve students' learning and health.
Undergirding all of these efforts is
the belief that combining meaningful
instructional improvements with focused
attention on the crucial nonacademic
factors that influence learning is the only
approach that will fully prepare our students
for the future. ASCD's Whole Child
State Snapshots will help provide the
necessary information and impetus for
making the whole child vision a reality for
even more of the nation's students.
